Overview of Hospital: University Hospital of Brooklyn, established in 1966 and located in central Brooklyn, New York, is the teaching Hospital of SUNY Downstate Medical Center. The center is the only academic medical center in Brooklyn and provides patient care, education, research and community services for the nearly three million people living in the Brooklyn area.
More physicians who practice medicine in New York City received their training at SUNY Downstate than any other medical center in the country. The University Hospital follows a three-fold mission: education, research, and patient care, with the medical school ranking seventh in the country in the number of graduates who are now engaged in academic medicine.
UHB is a 406-bed facility that also operates eight intensive care and step-down units, 12 operating rooms, an emergency department and a diagnostic and ambulatory surgery facility. In addition, UHB operates close to 75 clinics, three health centers as well as a dialysis center. UHB employs 4,800 medical care professionals.
The hospital offers expanded access to medical services, with its emergency room open to patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hospital treats an average of 60,000 patients per year in the emergency room and close to 18,000 as in-patients.

- UHB's Kidney and Transplant Center of Excellence offers ambulatory care for chronic kidney dialysis patients at the Kidney Dialysis Center.
- SUNY Downstate is a regional referral center for the most seriously ill cardiac patients
- The Division of Vascular Surgery has set the pace in the field of endovascular surgery, both in physician training and patient care.
- UHB's Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a regional referral center and is the only hospital in Brooklyn capable of offering pediatric cardiovascular surgery services, including procedures on neonates.
