Overview of Hospital: New York Methodist Hospital was established in 1881 after James Monroe Buckley, editor of The Christian Advocate, made a plea for a hospital in the area when a church organist died due to lack of proper medical care. George I. Seney donated money and property for the hospital. NYM is one of one of the leading medical facilities in New York City and is one of 70 Methodist hospitals in the United States.
New York Methodist has been serving the Brooklyn community for more than 125 years. As a member of the New York Presbyterian Healthcare System as well as a partner with the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, NYM has access to top-ranking physicians and comprehensive resources.
A voluntary, non-profit hospital, New York Methodist’s mission is "to provide excellent health care services in a compassionate and humane manner to the people who live and work in Brooklyn and its surrounding areas." Equipped with 501 beds, the hospital has three specialty units, including Adult and Pediatric, Coronary Care, and Intensive Care. NYM operates its emergency room 24 hours a day, seven days a week and treats more than 65,000 patients each year.
