Overview of Hospital: Built in 1831 as a one-room infirmary in Brooklyn, Kings County Hospital has demonstrated multiple "firsts" over the years including being the site of the first open-heart surgery performed in New York State, inventing the world's first hemodialysis machine, conducting the first studies of HIV infection in women as well as producing the first human images using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Today, Kings County is the anchor facility of the Central Brooklyn Family Health Network and maintains close relationships with diagnostic and long-term care centers within the network. The hospital is academically affiliated with SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
Kings County Hospital is a member of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC). HHC is the largest municipal hospital and health care system in the country. Kings is designated as an acute care hospital with 627 beds, over 550,000 clinic visits, and close to 130,000 emergency room visits each year.
Kings County Hospital Center offers specialized prevention and treatment services including cancer care, dentistry, osteoporosis and bone densitometry, rehabilitation services and sickle cell anemia management. In addition, Kings offers a full range of pediatric services including operating a Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit.

- Kings County Hospital Center operates a Level 1 Trauma Center, one of only three in Brooklyn serving 2.6 million residents of Brooklyn and Staten Island.
- Kings County's Parkinson ’s Disease Center of Excellence evaluates patients for Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. Kings County Hospital Center is the only public hospital in the world to be designated as a Center of Excellence by the National Institutes of Health for exploring neuroprotection.
- Kings County Hospital Center has been designated by the State of New York as a specialized stroke center. All patients with suspected stroke are evaluated rapidly in the Emergency Department, and appropriate treatment is started immediately.
