Complications of Gallbladder Surgery

Each year, about a half million Americans have their gallbladders removed. Most of those surgeries are performed as a laparoscopic chlolecystectomy, a procedure which is typically less invasive than traditional surgery and requires less recovery time. However, medical studies suggest that complications from gallbladder removal have actually increased since the advent of this modern surgical technique.

The Brooklyn gallbladder surgery lawyers of Schwartzapfel Partners P.C. have represented a number of clients who had complications following gallbladder surgery. We understand these serious complications are avoidable in the hands of skilled and experienced doctors. If you suffered complications after gallbladder surgery, you may be the victim of medical malpractice. You should consult a lawyer to understand your options.

The most common complication of gallbladder surgery is injury of the common bile duct. Either your doctor intentionally cut the common bile duct, mistaking it during surgery for the cystic duct, or your doctor inadvertently nicked or sliced the common bile duct or hepatic duct, causing leakage of bile into the abdominal cavity. In either case, you have suffered an avoidable injury and are now facing additional corrective surgeries and a lengthy recovery.  In some cases, patients will need reconstruction of their entire biliary system, which supplies bile from the liver to the intestine to aid digestion.

In many cases of gallbladder surgery malpractice, the doctor lacked the training to perform the surgery without error or did not have enough experience to perform it properly. Either way, you have suffered harm at the hands of someone to whom you entrusted your health. Now, you are facing more medical bills, the cost of prescription medicines and a loss of income for your time away from work.

At Schwartzapfel Partners P.C., we believe the doctors—not the patients—should pay for medical mistakes.  We understand the serious complications of gallbladder surgery and the physical and financial toll such complications can take on victims and their families. We will help you obtain the money you need to get back on your feet and provide for your family’s welfare while you recover. You have most likely suffered an avoidable injury and deserve compensation.
