Overview of Hospital: Brookdale University Hospital & Medical Center is a full service medical, surgical, pediatric, and rehabilitative, specialty and long term care provider. Founded in 1921, Brookdale is one of Brooklyn's largest voluntary, nonprofit teaching hospitals as well as a regional tertiary care center.
As a teaching hospital, Brookdale is dedicated to training new physicians and maintains a staff of more than 700 physicians, many recognized in the annual “Best Doctors” ratings. Brookdale is a major affiliate of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY-HSCB), an affiliate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and an affiliate of the New York University College of Dentistry.
BUHMC manages 530 inpatient beds, an extensive ambulatory care network known as Brookdale Family Care Centers and an Emergency Department and Level I Trauma Center that is among the busiest in the region.
The hospital also specializes in rehabilitative medicine and long-term specialty care in their Schulman and Schachne Institute for Nursing and Rehabilitation. In addition, Brookdale is home to 87 units of assisted living and independent housing in the Arlene and David Schlang Pavilion.

- Brookdale's Treatment for Life Center is a NY State Department of Health Designated AIDS Center, founded in 1993. The center treats over 1,000 people living with HIV, ranging from birth to adulthood.
- The Advanced Bariatric Care Center of Experience in Healthy Weight Loss is a total weight loss program for all patients with a fully medically managed, multi-disciplinary approach to weight loss.
- Brookdale Hospital has been designated as one of only four centers of Bioterrorism Preparedness in New York City.
- Brookdale Hospital has the first Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Center in Brooklyn for the treatment of smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, advanced wound healing, burns, decompression sickness, and radiation tissue injury among others.
